Engaging Adult Learners:
Designing and Delivering Impactful Learning Experiences

Many districts rely on their veteran teachers and coaches to deliver professional development experiences for their faculty. It may feel like a daunting prospect for teachers to provide professional development to a room of their peers: they can alleviate those fears by employing adult learning theory. When teachers and coaches who are tasked with facilitating professional development use research-based adult learning theories, they can have a greater impact on changing teacher practice. The Research for Better Teaching course Skillful Facilitation is a distillation of the most effective tools and strategies that can be wielded by veteran teachers and coaches to deliver high-quality professional development.

Please join us for a complimentary workshop on RBT's Skillful Facilitation offered by RBT Director of Professional Development and Learning Forward Coach DeNelle West. Skillful Facilitation is a program designed to help you plan and deliver an impactful professional learning experience that engages and excites your participants. Applying the same RBT approach to Areas of Performance, Repertoire, and Matching, Skillful Facilitation employs the same philosophy to construct learning experience for adults.

During this half-day session, attendees will have the opportunity to experience critical elements of the full 4-day program by focusing on the planning and delivery areas of the Skillful Facilitation Framework. This workshop will guide participants through using their ideas for developing and leading a professional learning experience by:

  • Exploring their content to appropriately shape experiences that lead to increased participant knowledge and skills

  • Identifying the degree of change in participant knowledge, skill, and behavior and defining specific learning objectives

  • Understanding the shifting roles to play in order to effectively engage an audience and guide them through learning

  • Building relationships with participants by understanding emotional intelligence and moves that enlist support

  • Selecting and applying appropriate protocols and experiential activities to deeply engage participants

For attendees to fully engage in this learning experience, please come prepared with thoughts, plans, itineraries, and ideas for a workshop, meeting, training session, or any professional learning experience to which you can apply your learning throughout the session.

‚ÄčThe workshop will take place on the morning of Wednesday, February 28, 2018 in the RBT Conference Room, 1 Acton Place, Acton, MA 01720. The snow date, if necessary, will be on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.
